Probable cause search located the weapon

On November 7, 2023, at approximately 09:35 p.m., Madison Police Department (MPD) Patrolman Trent Smith conducted a traffic stop in the 1400 block of State Road 62. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Thomas S. Lyons II, 55, Guilford, Indiana. During the traffic stop Patrolman Smith deployed his K-9 partner, Colt, to conduct an open-air sniff around the vehicle Lyons was operating. After K-9 Colt gave a positive indication on Lyons’ vehicle, a probable cause search was conducted, where officers located methamphetamine, controlled substances, narcotics paraphernalia, and a handgun that had previously been reported stolen out of Kentucky. Patrolman Smith was assisted in his investigation by Patrolman Andrew Gibbs. Lyons is facing the following preliminary charges but has a presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law:
Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon – Level 4 Felony
Possession of Methamphetamine – level 5 felony
Theft – level 5 felony
Possession of a Legend Drug – level 6 felony
Possession of a Schedule Controlled Substance – Class A misdemeanor
Possession of a Firearm by a Domestic Batterer – Class A misdemeanor
Possession of Paraphernalia – Class A misdemeanor
