(Versailles, Ind.) - We’re learning more about a plane crash that claimed the lives of a Versailles couple.

Greg Wehr and his wife Candace, both 55, died when their 1968 single-engine Cessna crashed in a Jennings County field Saturday night. They were just minutes from their destination at the Madison Municipal Airport as they flew home from Chicago.

Two witnesses tell WLKY-TV in Louisville that they heard an explosion then looked to the sky to see a ball of fire.

"I was driving down the highway, going from Madison to a friend's house ... and I was talking actually to her on the phone and looked up in the sky and saw a big ball of fire," Becky Puckett told the television station. “(I) just saw it fall straight down and explode when it hit the ground.”

Another witness gave a similar account. Jeremy Wade was inside a home when he hear the crash.

"We (were) all watching a movie, and we heard a loud, I mean it wasn't maybe 20 seconds, the sound of a racing engine and then an explosion," Wade told WLKY.

The FAA is investigating the deadly plane crash, but it will likely be several weeks before their findings are released.

Meanwhile, the Versailles community is mourning the loss of the Wehrs, who owned a large farm. Candace was a retired South Ripley Elementary School teacher.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
