By Alison Wiegand (Florence, Ky.) - St. Paul Catholic School in Florence has been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. St. Paul is in the top 15 percent of all schools in the United States, and one of only 50 private schools to receive the honor. The National Blue Ribbon Program award winning schools, announced Tuesday by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, were recognized for their overall academic excellence. The 32-year old program has awarded 7,900 American schools and the department will honor 287 public and 50 private schools at the next recognition ceremony in November. "These great schools are fulfilling the promise of American Education," said Duncan. "National Blue Ribbon Schools are models of consistent excellence and a resource for other schools and districts. We celebrate them for their tireless effort and boundless creativity in reaching and teaching every student." Schools are graded in two performance categories. Exemplary High Performing Schools rates the highest performing school within a state on state assessments or nationally normed tests. Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools are those successful in reducing achievement gaps between a school's subgroups and all students over a five year period. St. Paul Catholic School will accept their award on November 11, 2014, in a ceremony held in Washington D.C.
