St. Elizabeth Dearborn to Close Birthing Unit

The unit will be consolidated at St. Elizabeth Edgewood.

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – St. Elizabeth Dearborn has announced the closure of their birthing center.

In a release Tuesday, St. Elizabeth announced that birthing services will be consolidated into St. Elizabeth Edgewood.

An exact date for the closure and consolidation will be determined within the next several months.

According to a St. Elizabeth spokesperson, a certain volume level is needed to provide quality and sustainable service at the Dearborn location. The demand for birthing services in Dearborn County is currently low, averaging less than one delivery per day.

Deliveries at St. Elizabeth Dearborn have declined 34 percent during the past 12 years, and more than 60 percent of families already choose to deliver outside the county.

At the Edgewood location, there are 33 labor and delivery suites, postpartum suites, a six-bed recovery unit and other highly specialized areas.

“We remain committed to Dearborn County and have several long-term investments in services that support the community such as the new cancer center set to open next year, increases in endoscopy and cardiology services, and more access to primary care and specialty services,” said a St. E spokesperson.
