(Greendale, Ind.) - A campground manager died after being pinned underwater beneath his tractor Friday night, May 27. Glenn Burris, 46, of Aurora, worked at Horseshoe Campground in Greendale. The property – visible from Interstate 275 in Dearborn County – is a popular spot for campers in the spring and summer. Greendale Police Sgt. Kendle Davis says Burris had been operating a John Deere tractor spreading gravel at the campground. He spoke on the phone with his family saying that he would soon be on his way home. However, Burris never arrived home. His family came out to the campground to search for him. Just before 10:00 p.m., a visitor at the campground called to report Burris’ tractor overturned in a lake. Davis was among the first to arrive at the scene. He was able to use a flashlight to spot Burris’ leg submerged in the water. A wrecker helped pull the tractor from the water. Dearborn County Water Rescue and the Greendale Fire Department assisted in recovering Burris’ body. The Dearborn County Coroner’s Office pronounced Burris dead at the scene. According to Davis, it appears that Burris had been operating the tractor when it slid into the water. Burris was pinned underwater beneath the tractor. An official cause of death is pending with the results of an autopsy. Burris’ visitation will be held from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 2 at Rullman Hunger Funeral Home in Aurora. Services will be held at the funeral home on Friday, June 3 at 12:00 p.m. Burris is survived by his wife Mary Jean, children Justin and Reagan, mother, father, and four siblings.
