By Travis Thayer (Batesville, Ind.) – A historic local restaurant will be re-opening its doors under new ownership. Peyton Hughes and Georg Heringer, owners of HPH Hospitality, and operators of the Indy Lodge in Indianapolis, announced Tuesday that they have purchased the historic Sherman House Restaurant & Inn located in downtown Batesville. The Old World German and American cuisine restaurant previously closed its doors in January 2015 for cleaning and maintenance. After two weeks of cleaning and maintenance, the restaurant’s previous owner Doug Bessler made the difficult decision to not re-open the establishment. Bessler did however continue to work with the City of Batesville and local real estate agents in effort to find a new owner to re-open the restaurant that had been serving Batesville residents and traveler since 1865. That came to fruition on Tuesday. The new owners intend to apply a new coat of authentic German paint to the Sherman House. They also plan to renovate the entire building to retain its historic integrity. A grand re-opening date has not been announced at this time. The Sherman House first opened in 1865 as The Brinkman House. The establishment, which also includes 23 guest rooms, won the Hoosier Hospitality Award in 2008.
