The first-time event held at the Lawrenceburg Event Center featured masks, New Orleans style music by Robin Lacy and Dezydeco, Elvis look-a-likes, and karaoke by a few elected officials. After raising more than $6,600 for the center, Dearborn County candidates Greg and Amanda Corsmeier won the honor of Mardis Gras King and Queen. Ripley County’s court of Matt McNew and Amy Thomas were second with over $4,000 raised. Candidates from Ohio, Switzerland, and Jefferson counties also competed for votes in the form of dollars raised. The center located in Dillsboro is a comfortable place for investigators to speak with victims of child abuse. Specially-trained interviewers ask affected children about the experience. The conversations are recorded on video which can be shown in potential court cases, meaning the children only have to relive the traumatizing experience once. Since opening in 2009, the multi-county cooperative facility has served more than 2,000 child interviews.
