(Ripley County, Ind.) - An Osgood man is dead following a nearly head-on crash just south of Napoleon.

Indiana State Police responded to the crash on U.S. 421 around 9:00 AM Saturday.

The initial investigation indicated that Norman Kappes, 53, was traveling northbound when for an unknown reason his vehicle crossed the center line and collided with a Ripley County Highway Department dump truck, driven by Timothy Sides, 49, of Versailles.

Kappes sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. Sides was not injured.

Indiana State Police say alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash, but toxicology results on both drivers are pending.

U.S. 421 was closed for approximately five hours for crash investigation and cleanup.
