(Indianapolis, Ind.) – Performers of the Star-Spangled Banner won’t have to fear fines when performing the national anthem in Indiana.
State Senator Vaneta Becker (R-Evansville) recently introduced a bill that would create a law fining any person who embellished the anthem or changed the lyrics during performances in public buildings such as schools or colleges.
The bill was withdrawn from consideration by the state Senate’s education committee on Wednesday. The chairman did not offer an explanation, according to the Associated Press.
Becker said she does not plan to make a new appeal for the bill. She stated her main goal was to draw more attention to the need for respect towards the anthem.
