UPDATE: Miller Township Changes Fire Fund Public Hearing Date

Due to a failure of adequately advertising last year, this fund could not be established.

Update posted Tuesday, March 24th, 5:06 a.m.:

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak and Governor Holcomb's Stay-At-Home order, Miller Township will no longer be able to hold a public hearing on Tuesday, March 31.

This meeting date has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 22. This date allows for the meeting to happen after the Stay-At-Home order expires, April 7, but before the Statutory deadline of April 30.

The hearing will start at 7:00 PM at the Bright’s Lions Building on Lamplight Drive.

Original story posted Friday, March 13th, 7:36 a.m.:

(Dearborn Co., Ind.) - The Miller Township Board is attempting to finish what was started around this time last year.

Due to a failure of adequately advertising an original hearing last April, the Department of Local Government Finance denied the request to establish a Fire Fund to raise revenue for new fire trucks in Miller Township.

State rules require that attempting to reestablish this fund, the board wait one calendar year.

Last year, the board voted to establish this Fire Fund with no objection from the public.

The township board will be holding a public hearing on Tuesday, March 31 in hopes of having the same response from the public as last year.

The hearing on the proposed fire tax starts at 7:00 PM at the Bright’s Lions Building on Lamplight Drive.

The township board would have to pass the fire fund tax and publish a notice to implement this fund starting in 2021.

According to the notice, that the tax will be levied on all taxable real and personal property within the taxing district 3.33-cents per $100. For example, a property valued at $100,000 would have $33.30 cents in new property taxes each year.

Citizens could potentially stop this fund by petitioning against an approved Cumulative Fire Fund tax. Ten or more taxpayers in the township would have to file a petition with the county auditor within 30 days after a notice of adoption is published.
