City of Lawrenceburg Teams with Altafiber to Enhance Fiber Internet Services

Altafiber will acquire Lawrenceburg's fiber ring and additional fiber inventory.

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Better quality, better technology, better service, higher speeds and lower costs. 

Those were some of the talking points at a joint Utilities and City Council working session on Monday. 

The utility board and city council approved motions for the City of Lawrenceburg to enter an agreement with altafiber to purchase the Lawrenceburg Broadband Communications' broadband infrastructure. 

"The City of Lawrenceburg has been committed to ensuring local fiber internet service was available to serve our community. Investments we've made in fiber put Lawrenceburg on the cutting edge with respect to high-speed broadband connectivity. The time has come to take our local broadband internet technology to the next level with additional services and the most up to date technology at affordable rates for our residents and local businesses," said Mayor Kelly Mollaun. 

altafiber, formerly known as Cincinnati Bell, will pay $3 million to acquire Lawrenceburg's fiber ring and any additional fiber inventory. The company will pay $2.7 million at closing on February 23 with the remaining $300,000 in retention coming at the end of transition.

The City of Lawrenceburg will maintain ownership of the data center, where altafiber has agreed to lease six racks at $600 per month, per rack. 

The sale of the fiber network to altafiber will bring new video and phone services to Lawrenceburg, along with free wi-fi in city parks, and reduced and in some cases, free internet service for eligible low-income customers. 

"We are excited to partner with altafiber, and believe that with altafiber, our customers will now be able to realize even more the full value of a fiber-optic network that includes high-speed internet, video, voice and data opportunities," said Mayor Mollaun. 

The transition to altafiber is expected to take between six to eight months. In the meantime, customers can continue to sign up for LBC internet service. No disruption in internet service is expected during the transition. 

"We did the right thing today," said Mayor Mollaun. "I feel this is the best move we can for the community. We get the same services, and I really like what I see. 

Mayor Mollaun added that he expects a smooth transition, saying "this is what they (altafiber) do and they know how to do it."

Lawrenceburg Broadband Communications currently has approximately 560 customers.
