Indiana House Approves First Sexual Harassment Policy For Lawmakers

A unanimous House vote on Thursday approved a policy similar to the one adopted by the Senate two weeks ago.

Indiana Statehouse

(Indianapolis, Ind.) - The Indiana legislature is now subject to sexual harassment policies.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb announced a no tolerance policy during the 2018 legislative session. But the message may have fallen flat after misconduct allegations arose last year against Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill and House Speaker Brian Bosma.

A unanimous House vote on Thursday approved a policy similar to the one adopted by the Senate two weeks ago. This marks the first time state lawmakers are covered by a specific sexual harassment policy.

The House rules define what sexual harassment is. The House Ethics Committee is tasked with investigating any claims brought forth. Those who raise concerns will be protected from retaliation.

The new policy also bans lawmakers from having any sexual conduct with interns, even if it is consensual.
