No Salads at Batesville School Cafeterias Until Further Notice

The decision is out of an abundance of caution due to the cyclosporiasis outbreak statewide

(Batesville, Ind.) - Out of an abundance of caution, the Batesville Community School corporation will not serve salads at any of its cafeterias during August.

To date, there have been over 1,300 cases of cyclosporiasis in the state of Indiana.

Cyclosporiasis is an illness caused by a microscopic parasite, Cyclospora cayetanensis. Food or water can become contaminated with poop that contains the parasite. People can then become sick by consuming the contaminated food or water.

Previous outbreaks of cyclosporiasis in the United States have been linked to bagged salad mixes and kits (pre-cut lettuce blends with romaine, iceberg, cabbage, carrots), fresh herbs such as cilantro and basil, raspberries, green onions and other fresh produce.

"Since all of the sources of the nationwide cyclosporiasis outbreak have not yet been confirmed, we're limiting cafeteria choices for a short time. Thanks for your understanding! We will keep you updated regarding September and beyond," reads a statement from Batesville Schools.

Batesville student return to the classroom next week.
