(Milan, Ind.) - Milan Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to Milan High School early Friday morning for a report of a possible fire in a garbage truck.
The driver of the truck reported seeing smoke come from the bed area of the truck around 4:38 a.m.
Upon arrival, crews were able to locate an active fire inside the bed of the truck. Due to safety concerns for the kids and school staff during morning operations the decision to relocate the truck to the Milan Community Park was made.
The driver was able to safely eject the load, and crews were able quickly bring the fire under control.
Crews from Todd's Wrecker service and Best Way quickly arrived on scene and took over clean-up operations.

"Please use this as a reminder that proper Disposal of batteries and other hazardous waste is very important. Small lithium batteries from vape, phones, and whatever can quickly start a fire. The driver of the truck deserves a pat on the back for being observant and quick to call for help," reads a statement from MVFD.
