(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - After months of discussion, Dearborn County Commissioners have passed a multi-million dollar plan to expand the county jail.

The commissioners voted 2-1 Tuesday, with Jeff Hughes going against the plan, to add 120 new minimum security beds to the Dearborn County Law Enforcement Center at an estimated cost of between $8.38 million and $9.26 million.

Representatives from Indianapolis-based planning firm RQAW, Inc. presented the commissioners a scaled back version of the jail expansion, the cost of which had reached up to $14.8 million earlier this year.

In addition to the new inmate beds, the project would expand the intake area, create more space for the sheriff’s department offices, and renovate part of the current jail into a work release center, according to a county press release. Space would also be created for badly needed rehabilitation program activities, including reading, JTAP, and GED preparation.

It will now be up to Dearborn County Council to decide whether to fund the jail project before it can begin.
