Batesville Memorial Public Library Outlines Reopening, Safety Procedures

Starting Monday, May 11, BMPL will begin the first steps of providing access to library materials.

(Batesville, Ind.) - The Batesville Memorial Public Library (BMPL) temporarily closed in March in response to COVID-19 regulations. As the situations develops and changes, the library will reopen in phases.

Last Friday, May 1, Governor Holcomb outlined the "Back On Track Indiana" phased plan to reopen the state. Stage 2 of Gov. Holcomb’s plan gives public libraries the ability to phase back into services based on local needs, staffing, and the community’s situation.

BMPL Library Director Kim Porter and the Library Board of Trustees have spent the last few weeks researching and developing a plan to reopen in phases, which has recently been approved by the Ripley County Health Department. This plan includes steps to provide essential services first and then gradually work toward enhanced services.

Beginning on Monday, May 11, BMPL will begin their first steps of providing access to library materials through curbside services between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. These service will continue indefinitely on weekdays.

Customers can reserve items through Evergreen or by phoning the library. When items are ready for pickup, customers may drive into the circle on the south side of the building and call the library at (812) 932-1298 to notify the staff you are outside and ready for your items.

For the safety of patrons and staff, this will be a contact free material delivery. All materials should be returned in the drop box.

BMPL hopes to offer document services such as faxing and limited computer access for filing for social services or job hunting in the near future. Other services will also be phased in as soon as the option is feasible.

The building will continue to be closed for general visits and access. As part of the phased opening process, the library will gradually open the building. When the building does open to visitors, changes will be made.

The main meeting room will remain closed and will serve as the public computer area. Plexiglass will be installed at service areas. Depending on duties, staff members may be wearing masks and gloves. BMPL will follow guidelines on the number of people allowed in the building, as well as social distancing and elevated sanitation procedures.

In programming areas, the library will concentrate on online activities and outdoor events.

Although the format may be different, Summer Reading for all ages will be held this summer.

"In all that we do patron and staff safety are a priority," says the Batesville Memorial Public Library.

Community members are reminded that the library does offer resources for ebooks and downloadable audio on Overdrive and Libby. Movies and TV shows can be found on the newest addition, Hoopla.

"Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate these uncharted waters together. BMPL is still here to serve the community and we look forward to the day we can once again open our doors," says the BMPL.
