(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Lawrenceburg Community Schools students are getting and giving a lesson in local history.

Seven classes of 3rd grade students at Central Elementary School are on a walking tour through downtown Lawrenceburg Tuesday. Lawrenceburg High School students are stationed at various locations throughout downtown’s historic district giving the 3rd graders quick lessons about that location’s history.

Lawrenceburg High School social studies and history teacher Brandon Lorton says the high schoolers had to research their designated tour stops in creating presentations for the younger students on the tour.

Student Kelly Hunt said she learned that her location, the Hunt House building - now home to United Community Bank - at the corner of High and Walnut streets, was the home of Jesse Hunt, a Lawrenceburg business man in the 1800s.

"I spoke to a historian at the library. At one point it was a hotel. Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln stayed here," Hand said.

Other tour stops include the Dearborn County Courthouse, Liberty Theater, Walnut Theater, Vance-Tousey House, Lawrenceburg Train Depot, the Ohio River levee, the Hamline Chapel, and other locations with significance to the city’s past and present.
