Throughout their history, the Sisters have demonstrated compassion and commitment to serving those most in need.

(Oldenburg, Ind.) - The Sisters of St. Francis will joyfully celebrate the 175th anniversary of their founding, with special events planned throughout the year.
On January 6, 1851, Mother Theresa Hackelmeier arrived in Oldenburg, Indiana, from Austria to establish the congregation, answering the call to educate German immigrant children in the area. Over the past 175 years, the Sisters have remained steadfast in their mission to educate, uplift, and advocate for justice across generations and numerous locations.
Their story is not only one of education, but also of continued service rooted deeply in faith. In addition to education, the Sisters have embraced ministries in social services, healthcare, pastoral care, and the advocacy of peace and justice. Faithful to their calling, they are “sent to extend the mission of Jesus through their presence and service.”
Throughout their history, the Sisters have demonstrated compassion and commitment to serving those most in need. Their hard work, joyfulness, and Franciscan charism have had a profound and lasting impact on countless lives. This milestone is not only a celebration of the past, but also a renewed commitment to continue their ministries into the future.
The public is invited to send cards of congratulations to: Sisters of St. Francis P.O. Box 100 Oldenburg, IN 47036
