(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - The Dearborn Community Foundation (DCF), Inc. recently awarded a $1,000 Proactive Grant to PAWS of Dearborn County to help the non-profit agency continue to offer top-notch services for our fury friends looking for homes, and to improve the lives of unwanted and abandoned animals by providing a safe and humane shelter environment; promoting adoptions and pet owner education; and reducing the animal population of Dearborn County by sponsoring spay/neuter programs.

In its 25th year of helping donors make a difference, DCF is awarding 15 proactive grants of $1,000 each throughout 2023 to charitable organizations that serve Dearborn County residents. Each of the Foundation’s 15 volunteer Board members is recommending a grant. The money comes from the Foundation’s Unrestricted Endowment Funds, established by donors to provide flexibility to address changing needs in the community over the years.

DCF Board member Becky Lyons made the PAWS grant recommendation.

"I have a real soft spot for animals, and I know that PAWS is struggling right now with budget constraints and limited funding," said Lyons. "I would like to do what I can do to help take care of animals."

PAWS' vision is to ensure that 100 percent of adoptable animals are given an opportunity for a "forever, loving home." Its long-term goal is to help reduce pet over-population in Dearborn County, and to educate and assist the public on humane, responsible animal care.

The Lawrenceburg animal shelter, called PAWS of Dearborn County Humane Center, is owned, and operated by PAWS. Under its agreement with the county, PAWS is responsible for animal care, while the county remains responsible for animal control. PAWS has been managed by a board of directors since inception in 2001. This board oversees all policies for the Humane Center, cooperatively with the center director, to develop and maintain optimum health and well-being of the animals and promote high adoption rates.
