The outlook shows favorable probabilities for a typical La Nina pattern to evolve across the eastern portion of the U.S.
La Nina means there will be cooler than normal ocean temperatures in the eastern Pacific Ocean near the equator off the South American coasts. The cooler water affects weather patterns in the U.S., especially during the winter months.
According to the NWS, there is equal chances of above or below normal temperatures throughout the winter months in the tri-state area.
In terms of precipitation, the NWS outlook forecasts a wetter than normal winter in the area.
"Impactful winter weather can occur at any time, even in areas in which warmer than normal and drier than normal conditions are favored. That is why it is so important to always be prepared for the worst of winter weather,” reads a statement from the National Weather Service.
