Lawrenceburg Police Department Receives Grant for Body Cameras

The body cams will be paid for using an Indiana Local Body Camera Grant and matching funds.

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - February 2022, the Lawrenceburg Police Department applied to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) under the Indiana Local Body Camera Grant program. The state of Indiana, through procedures established by the Indiana State Police (ISP) and administered by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS), created this program to provide matching grants to city, town, and county law enforcement agencies for the acquisition of body-worn cameras. The goal is to enable the provision of essential government services despite substantial reductions in revenue suffered by local entities because of the COVID-19 public health emergency. This program will be known as the Indiana Local Body Camera (ILBC) Grant Program.

On April 1^st, 2022, the Lawrenceburg Police Department received notice of a $15,200 ILBC grant award to be used towards the implementation of body worn cameras. The LPD will provide a funding match of $3,800 towards the total $19,000 project as required per the ILBC grant agreement.

LPD Chief David Schneider shared, “Body cameras provide valuable evidence in the investigation of crimes. Body cameras also provide transparency to the community about the actions of law enforcement. From an administrative aspect, they also allow us to review how our officers handle situations and to provide training and guidance to young officers on how to do things better. But more times than not, our officers are doing the right thing and the body cameras also will clearly back that up."
