(Indianapolis, Ind.) - Indiana lawmakers are dropping a proposal to require a single-class high school basketball postseason.

State Senator Mike Delph (R-Carmel) told a committee this afternoon he will cut the basketball tournament proposal from a larger piece of school legislation, the Indianapolis Star reports.

The basketball bill was originally authored by Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg).

The IHSAA went to four-class tournament in boys and girls basketball in 1997, crowning one state champion in each division.

Delph said the current class system which divides schools into four divisions based on enrollment has “failed miserably.”

Indiana High School Athletic Association Commissioner Bobby Cox said there will be statewide town halls to see what the interest is in returning to a single class tournament.

No dates or times have been set for those meetings.

The bill was set to be brought up in a hearing of the Senate Education Committee Wednesday afternoon.
