INDOT Lifts Weight Restriction On US 52

(Franklin County, Ind.) – A second round of evaluations has determined that a weight restriction prohibiting large trucks and school buses on a Franklin County bridge can be removed.

The Indiana Department of Transportation announced November 30 that a 15-ton eight limit would be imposed on the U.S. 52 bridge over Yellow Bank Creek in western Franklin County.

After further field measurements and investigation by INDOT engineers, recommendations were given that the bridge could be reopened to normal state highway traffic.

Road signs advising of the weight limit are expected to be removed by the end of the day Friday.

The restriction placed a brief burden on Franklin County Community Schools, which had to reroute some school buses around the bridge.

“The Indiana Department of Transportation sincerely appreciates the patience of those who have been inconvenienced over the past week,” said INDOT District Deputy Commissioner Kathy Eaton-McKalip. “This action was taken to ensure highway bridges have high margins of safety.”

The U.S. 52 Yellow Bank Creek bridge was originally constructed in 1929. It is scheduled for replacement in 2017.
