INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana’s new abortion law goes into effect today.
Senate Enrolled Act 1 was signed into law by Governor Holcomb in August following a special legislative session.
The new law closes all abortion centers in Indiana, ensuring any abortions performed under certain exceptions are done in medical settings with necessary oversight such as treatment of life-threatening complications.
Abortions will be allowed when the mother is at risk, in case of rape or incest, and fatal fetal anomalies up to 20 weeks post-fertilization.
Indiana was the first state in the country to pass an abortion ban following the overturn of Roe v. Wade in June.
Multiple lawsuits are pending in Indiana courts regarding the new law. The ACLU and several abortion care providers are among the organizations challenging the abortion ban.
Hearings are scheduled to start on Monday.
