Indiana Unemployment Rate Up in October

INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana’s unemployment rate in October stands at 3.0 percent, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. By comparison, the national unemployment rate in October stands at 3.7 percent, compared to 3.5 percent in September.

In addition, Indiana’s labor force participation rate is 63.3 percent for October, remaining above the national rate of 62.2 percent. Indiana’s total labor force, which includes both Hoosiers employed and those seeking employment, stands at 3,397,335 - a decrease of 3,724 from the previous month.

Private sector employment in Indiana increased by 6,900 jobs over the last month, translating to a gain of 83,000 jobs from this time last year. Indiana once again is experiencing a peak in private employment, which now stands at 2,782,000. Industries that experienced job increases in October included:

  • Manufacturing (+2,800);
  • Private Educational and Health Services (+1,900);
  • Trade, Transportation and Health Services (+1,700);
  • Financial Activities (+1,200); and
  • Leisure and Hospitality (+1,100).

As of Nov. 16, 2022, there were 142,024 open job postings throughout the state. In October, 17,622 people in Indiana received unemployment benefits.
