By Mike Perleberg (Indianapolis, Ind.) – The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is asking Hoosiers to help track the summer production of wild turkeys. The DNR says surveys will provide useful estimates about annual production by hens and the survival of poults, or young turkeys, through the summer brood-rearing period. The summer brood survival is generally a primary factor influencing the wild turkey population, according to the department. Volunteers can complete a web-based survey to record their wild turkey sighting during July and August to provide the DNR with information about turkey reproduction. The online system will allow for broader coverage across the state and greater participation. The survey is available online at wildlife.IN.gov/8641.htm. Users will be asked to report information including the number of hens and poults seen and the county in which the observation was made, as well as sightings of adult hens without young.
