INDIANAPOLIS - There is only one school in the state of Indiana that has adopted a four-day school week.
Vinton Elementary School in Lafayette is in the midst of a three-year pilot program, which has reportedly yielded positive results, such as improved attendance, academic gains, and improved mental health and engagement
This week, the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) released official guidance for schools considering a move to a four-day week.
Under House Enrolled Act 1266, effective July 1, schools must meet key criteria before the State Board of Education can approve such a move.
Schools must earn an “A” accountability grade; demonstrate improved student outcomes; engage families, staff and the community in the decision-making process; and provide remedial and enrichment opportunities on the fifth day for students who choose to attend a traditional five-day school.
Schools must also offer transportation for those students and pay teachers at least $45,000 annually.
Nationwide, about 850 school districts operate on a four-day schedule, with potential budget savings of 0.4 to 2.5 percent annually.
