IDHS, FEMA Assess Holton Tornado Damage

Fragmented pieces of homes and buildings in tornado-ravaged Holton.

Mike Perleberg-Eagle 99.3

(Holton, Ind.) - Representatives from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, FEMA, and the governor’s office toured Holton on Tuesday.

They were assessing the damage from the deadly EF3 tornado which left parts of the western Ripley County town more closely resembling a war zone than a quiet Midwestern town.

The IDHS and FEMA representatives will report their findings to Governor Mitch Daniels, who could then seek disaster aid from the president. Ripley County was previously placed under a state of emergency following the tornado.

Hoosiers who sustained storm damage March 2 can report it online at www.in.gov/dhs. In the middle of the page under “Topics of the Day,” click on “Citizen Damage Reports for March Severe Weather.”

The damage reports from state officials and residents are a key part of the process to determine if it is appropriate for the state to seek the federal aide.
