Just under 80 impaired drivers were taken off Indiana roadways.

INDIANAPOLIS – Officers made more than 7,000 traffic stops during a holiday enhanced enforcement effort.
The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute today announced the results from the Safe Family Travel campaign that ran from Thanksgiving through New Year's.
In total, police officers across the state conducted 582 overtime patrols and worked an extra 2,441 hours. Those officers made 7,283 traffic stops, which resulted in 3,277 citations and 3,709 warnings.
Nearly one-third (2,197) of the citations and warnings issued were for excessive speeds.
Police made 297 arrests during the enforcement campaign. Of the arrests, 79 were for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
“If these results are any indication, reckless driving continues to be a pervasive problem and one that we didn’t leave behind in 2021,” said Devon McDonald, ICJI Executive Director. “Nearly 30 more people were killed last month compared to January of 2019. The reckless driving has to stop. It’s costing us precious lives.”
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 10,000 people die in drunk driving crashes every year in the U.S.
Although the enforcement campaign is over, officers are always on the lookout for reckless driving. Motorists are encouraged to never drive impaired, always wear a seat belt, follow the posted speed limits, watch for pedestrians and avoid distractions behind the wheel.
