(Jefferson County, Ky.) - One of last week’s tornados in southern Indiana was on the ground for 49 miles, the National Weather Service says.
The multi-vortex tornado touched down near Frederisckburg in southern Washington County.
It then tore a path through New Pekin, Henryville, Marysville, and Chelsea before crossing the Ohio River into Bedford, Kentucky, the weather service office in Louisville said Tuesday.
By the time the nearly half-mile wide EF4 had dissipated, it had been wreaking havoc for 49 minutes across two states.
The tornado’s 175 MPH winds claimed the lives of 11 people, including four victims in Jefferson County near Chelsea.
A map of the tornado’s path can be found on the National Weather Service website at http://www.crh.noaa.gov/Image/lmk/03022012_EF4.htm.
