Great Parks Winter Hike Series Continues at Miami Whitewater Forest

(Hamilton County, Oh.) -The popular Great Parks Winter Hike Series adds a sustainability angle this year with the introduction of composting for leftover soup, spoons and bowls served at the end of each hike.

The Winter Hike Series is a reminder of the four-season fun visitors enjoy from the big lands at Great Parks. Many hikers look forward to the series each year for the opportunity to feel a chill on their cheeks while experiencing how Great Parks destinations look completely different in the winter. Hikes range in distance from 4-5.5 miles, each at a different park for the chance to enjoy different wintertime panoramas.

Every hike ends with a bowl of hot soup for the hundreds of people who participate. This year for the first time, spoons and bowls for the soup are compostable, and any leftover bites of soup are also being added to compost. Great Parks is partnering with GoZero, a food waste compost courier, on the initiative. GoZero collects compostable materials after the completion of each hike and will provide Great Parks with data on the project’s impact. Composting builds on the Great Parks legacy of conservation and diverts these materials from the landfill, adding to the 14 tons of waste Great Parks diverted from landfills in 2023.

Cost for the Winter Hike Series is $10 per person per hike. Children under 12 are free. All hikes in the series start at 10 a.m., and upcoming outings include:
