(Sparta, Ky.) - The Kentucky Speedway was among the topics that were discussed at a Northern Kentucky Area Development District meeting on Monday night in Warsaw.
Gallatin County residents were invited to share ideas, discuss opportunities, and help shape a community development “wish list" for the county, which is considering rezoning the property for industrial purposes.
One idea floated by residents is developing housing on the dormant Kentucky Speedway property.
Before anything can happen at the speedway property, the owners will need to be willing to sell. Kentucky Speedway is owned by Speedway Motorsports Inc.
The Kentucky Speedway has not hosted a race since 2020, and a return to racing is not likely. Since racing was halted, the speedway was used to store thousands of Ford pickup trucks waiting for computer chips, and an EDM music festival.
In 2024, Gallatin County judge Ryan Morris and NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin expressed their desire for racing to return to Kentucky. However. the track is viewed as dilapidated, needing major renovations and government subsidies, with the state of Kentucky not willing to contribute.
