The counterfeit bills each had the same serial number, allowing police to connect the suspects to transactions at multiple stores.

(Aurora, Ind.) – Their funny money was a little too funny to avoid detection.

A Hamilton, Ohio couple are accused of paying for merchandise at Kroger in Lawrenceburg and Walmart in Aurora using counterfeit $100 bills.

Aurora Police say a male and female later identified as Jason and Carol Feltner used two fake $100 bills in two separate transactions at Walmart. According to a court affidavit, they made small purchases in order to receive a large amount of change in real currency.

Walmart’s asset protection associate later identified the bills as fake because they had identical serial numbers and black ink writing.

A couple days after the fake money was used at Walmart, a counterfeit $100 bill was used to make a purchase at Kroger just up U.S. 50. It also had the same serial number.

Aurora Police released photos of the suspects on social media. An anonymous tip identified the fake bill passing suspects as the Feltners.

Jason and Carol Feltner are each charged with Counterfeiting (level 6 felony) and Theft (class A misdemeanor). Jason Feltner was booked into jail at the Dearborn County Law Enforcement Center on Monday, March 18. Carol Feltner’s status is not known.
