(Dearborn County, Ind.) – Out of almost than 2,000 entries for Eagle 99.3's recent Drug Free Poster Contest presented by Dearborn County Citizens Against Substance Abuse, these four students had the best artwork. Students from kindergarten through 12th grade in all three of Dearborn County’s three school districts were invited to submit their entries in the poster contest promoting a drug-free, healthy lifestyle. “Youth can be role models for other youth, and the sooner they have that mindset that they don’t want to go into that high-risk behavior the better off we are,” said Donna Thacker, director of Dearborn County CASA. Every single entry was put on display during a gallery and free family event held by CASA on Saturday, September 20 at the Lawrenceburg Community Center. Each child attending the gallery was given a free ribbon proclaiming “Better things to do than drugs!” The poster judging was performed by volunteers from AIM Young Professionals of Dearborn County. The group also assisted with the task of taping the roughly 2,000 entries to the walls at the community center. Each of the four age category winners received a $100 gift card courtesy of Eagle 99.3 and CASA. In addition, their winning entry was framed and given back to them to display at home or school. It showed a person arrested for drugs heading to jail. Grace Klayer from Aurora Elementary School won the 3rd-5th grade category. “You can choose to do other activities like sports and soccer and basketball instead of basically ruining yourself with drugs,” Klayer said. Sunman-Dearborn Middle School student Hannah Middleton had the best poster in the judges’ opinion in 6th-8th grade. She came up with her poster idea after sitting at her kitchen table for an hour. “I wanted to do a comparison between two people. I drew her first standing their looking at you, then I wanted more pizzazz on it so I made her looking in the mirror,” explains Middleton, whose poster featured the contrast between a drug user and a clean individual. The 9th-12th grade winner was East Central High School student Holly Lattire, a colorful, cleverly designed poster titled “Make Your Choice” again contrasting the difference between a drug-free person and somebody who has not made the right choices. Thacker thanked Eagle 99.3 general manager Melissa Murphy for helping make the poster contest possible. Murphy expressed thanks to the teachers, administrators, and students for participating.
