(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Just like bird watching, volunteering is a year-round hobby.
Oxbow Inc. is hosting its Oxbow Cleanup this Saturday, June 15 from 9:00 a.m. until noon. It is one of a handful of such cleanup events Oxbow Inc. holds each year.
“We get a lot of contributions of trash. The river is generous. When it floods it sends us all sorts of things from as far away as West Virginia,” says Oxbow Inc. Board of Directors President Jon Seymour.
Volunteers are asked to email meg@oxbowinc.org for information and paperwork by Friday, June 14. Check-in will be at Oxbow West entrance in Hardintown off of U.S. 50. A free lunch will be provided to volunteers afterward. Volunteers must sign a release. Those under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The importance of the Oxbow preservation comes down to protecting the minimally-disturbed area which provides a natural habitat for wildlife.
Seymour says the 7.8 square mile area occupying Indiana and Ohio is a major resting place for migratory birds. It’s also a critical home for some species in the winter.
People enjoy the Oxbow, too, as a place where they can get closer to nature.
