(Ripley County, Ind.) - The Ripley County Community Foundation is honored to announce the establishment of the Luke Schwegman Mental and Behavioral Wellness Fund, a new endowment created to expand access to mental health programs for residents.

Inspiration Behind the Fund

This fund was created in honor of Luke Schwegman, who tragically took his life on August 1, 2021, when he was just 23 years old. Luke was hardworking, handsome, and happiest outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, and riding his Razor, spending many hours doing the things he enjoyed most. Luke grew up surrounded by a loving and supportive family as well as numerous friends. Although he had a caring and understanding support system, Luke struggled with depression.

Despite having a strong support system, Luke faced ongoing challenges with depression. Like many individuals struggling with mental illness, he encountered barriers to seeking professional help, including fear of stigma and misconceptions about treatment. In an effort to cope, he attempted to manage his symptoms on his own rather than accessing available mental‑health resources.

Tragically, Luke lost his life to his battle with mental illness—an experience that far too many families in our communities understand all too well.

About the Fund

Following Luke’s death, Luke’s mother, Margie Schwegman, was determined to transform their family’s tragedy into meaningful change for others. “After doing some research I discovered the limited resources, education and awareness in our area. Which is why this fund was created,” stated Margie Schwegman. “The proceeds from this fund are to be utilized by organizations and businesses that are key in treating and assisting those affected by mental illness and the obstacles they encounter. One second, One minute, One day at a time… We can all make a difference.”
