DCH Foundation Awards 16 Scholarships To Local Graduates

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - The Dearborn County Hospital Foundation recently hosted its annual scholarship banquet at the Dearborn Country Club.  Sixteen graduates of the class of 2015 each received a $500 scholarship through the DCH Foundation High School Senior Scholarship Program. Scholarship recipients were selected from throughout Dearborn, Ohio, Ripley, Switzerland and Franklin Counties.  Each will be pursuing a medical or healthcare career this fall at an accredited college or university. The program began with the Rev. William Helms, President of the DCH Foundation, awarding three scholarships.  He presented the Anna F. Woods Estate Award to Franklin County High School graduate Sarah L. Huber of West Harrison, who is working toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree from Miami University Hamilton.  Erin L. Webb of Aurora, a Rising Sun High School graduate who is pursuing Athletic Training and Physical Therapy degrees from the University of Indianapolis, received the Edward & Grace Gray Scholarship.  Rev. Helms presented the Elizabeth Anderson Scholarship to Leah M. Wendel of Cedar Grove, also a Franklin County High School graduate studying to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree from Miami University Hamilton. DCH Chief of Staff, Dr. Nancy Kennedy, followed with two scholarships. She presented the DCH Medical Staff Award to Courtney D. Eckstein of Batesville, a graduate of Oldenburg Academy, who is working toward a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Sciences/Pre-Med from the University of Cincinnati.  The Dearborn-Ohio County Medical Society Scholarship went to Batesville’s Audrey E. Wilson, a Batesville High School graduate seeking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree from the Franciscan University of Steubenville. Three DCH Auxiliary Scholarships were awarded by Sylvia Plashko, DCH Auxiliary President. The scholarships were presented to Kelli N. Smith of Moores Hill, a Milan High School graduate, who will work toward a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Indiana University; Paige A. Reinshagen of Lawrenceburg, an East Central High School graduate, who will pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Sciences from the University of Cincinnati and then a Doctorate in Physical Therapy; and Rachel M. Merkel of Batesville, a Batesville High School graduate, who will work toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree at IUPU Columbus. DCH President/CEO Roger D. Howard presented the Henry W. Conrad, M.D., Memorial Scholarship to Sydney K. Romines of Lawrenceburg, a Lawrenceburg High School graduate seeking a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry/Pre-Med from IUPUI.  The Helen Conrad Scholarship went to Lawrenceburg High School graduate Ashlee E. Miller of Greendale, who will attend Butler University for her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree.  These awards were initiated in 2014 in recognition of the contributions made by the late Dr. Henry Conrad to the local medical community and to honor his wife, Helen, for her ongoing dedication to Southeastern Indiana. The Toddywalla family attends the scholarship banquet each summer to present a scholarship in memory of the late Noshir Toddywalla, M.D.  Dr. Toddywalla’s brother, Aspi, his sister-in-law Maharukh, and his nieces Natasha and Shiraz presented the Noshir R. Toddywalla, M.D., Memorial Scholarship to Bailey M. Baker of Rising Sun, a Rising Sun High School graduate, whose goal is to obtain a Master of Science Degree in Speech Pathology from the University of Indianapolis. Dearborn County Hospital Board of Trustees member William Ritzmann, Chairman of the United Community Bank Board of Directors, presented the United Community Bank Award to Ashley M. Cavins of Milan.  Ms. Cavins, a Milan High School graduate, is working to obtain a Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Imaging Technology from IUPUI. Mr. Ritzmann then presented two scholarships established by the late Anna Cook O’Brien.  Receiving these awards were Makayla D. Little of Brookville and Riley T. Phagan of Vevay.  Ms. Little is a Franklin County High School graduate headed to Northern Kentucky University for her Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree.  Mr. Phagan, a graduate of Switzerland County High School, is seeking a Bachelor of Science Degree in Athletic Training from the University of Indianapolis with the intent to obtain a graduate degree in Physical Therapy. New this year was the Dearborn County Hospital Federal Credit Union Scholarship.  Bruce Canfield, President of the Credit Union’s Board of Directors, presented the scholarship to Kailin N. Mitchell of Aurora.  She is a South Dearborn High School graduate who will work toward her Bachelor of Science Degree in Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology (Occupational Therapy) from Hanover College. Lawrenceburg Lions Club President Larry Bishoff presented the final award of the evening.  The Lawrenceburg Lions Club Scholarship went to Cara M. Nutley of Greendale, a Lawrenceburg High School graduate seeking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree from IUPUI.
