(Brookville, Ind.) - Brookville Lake beaches are going to be open to the public on what is expected to be a hot Labor Day weekend. There were various media reports this week that high levels of blue-green algae had closed the beaches and Mounds and Quakertown state recreation areas. While the beaches were temporarily closed Tuesday and Wednesday for high levels of E. coli in the water, an Indiana Department of Natural Resources spokesman says new testing on Thursday determined that levels are now safe and the beaches will be open. Levels of blue-green algae remain high with advisories issued for Mounds, Quakertown, and Whitewater Memorial State Park. However, the DNR does not consider the level dangerous as long as people and pets avoid direct contact with the toxic algae. Swimmers hitting the Brookville Lake beaches are advised to not drink the water and to shower after swimming.
