(Greendale, Ind.) – Fiber broadband is coming to the City of Greendale.

Mayor Alan Weiss tells Eagle Country 99.3 that city council approved Wednesday a deal with Cincinnati Bell to bring fiber broadband to businesses and residents in Greendale.

Weiss says the fiber broadband will be a lot faster and more reliable than what Greendale businesses and residents are used to.

Cincinnati Bell offers up to 1 GB which equals 1,000 MB per second. Currently, a lot of homes in Greendale have 25 MB per second or less. The minimum package offers 100 MB per second.

“If you are going from 25 to 100, are going to see a big improvement,” said Weiss. “Its just time to get with the future and step it up and offer our residents something they deserve.

Work to install fiber lines is expected to start early next year. It will take 18 months to two years to complete installation.

The City of Greendale is investing $645,000 into the $3.5 million project. With the help of Lawrenceburg Community School Corporation and Superintendent Karl Galey, Greendale was awarded a GEER grant from the state that will award the city up to $625,000.

“This has been a project that myself and my team have been working on for the last two to three years trying to look at all the avenues and all the possibilities of what we could get that would be the best for the city with the lowest cost for the city, and a fair price to the residents. Special thanks to my team, Mr. Karl Galey, Al Abdon, Steve Lampert, Anthony Smart, and CTC Technologies.”

Mayor Weiss added that improved broadband services were among the top wants from city residents when he started campaigning.

“I was pushing to get it done, but without the team of people I had helping me, it just made it happen easier,” said Weiss. “I want make sure everybody that deserves the credit gets the credit.”
