Chinese? German? Spanish? Indiana BMV Introducing Driving Tests In 11 Languages

By Mike Perleberg (Indianapolis, Ind.) – If you can read this it may not pertain to you, but the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is now offering drivers tests in 11 new languages. The BMV announced Wednesday the decision was made at the urging of businesses, universities and advocacy groups. “Consistent with the vision of Governor Pence and Lieutenant Governor Ellspermann to bring international jobs to Indiana, and their trade missions around the world, Indiana has become an attractive option for foreign business,” said BMV Commissioners Don Snemis. In addition to English, the languages that will be offered include Arabic, Burmese, Chin, German, Japanese, Korean, Punjabi, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish and Vietnamese. The languages were chosen based on an Indiana Youth Institute study of primary languages spoken in the state’s households. “Additionally, Indiana has one of the largest foreign student populations in the country thanks to our outstanding institutions of higher learning. As a result, Indiana is a proud partner in the global business community. We welcome business leaders and students from all nations, and we hope that our efforts will play a small part in welcoming more investment in Indiana,” Snemis said. Those new translated tests should be available at most BMV branches with automated testing terminals by mid-August.
