Camp Ernst Road Project Underway

(Burlington, Ky.) – Utility work has begun on a multi-year, multi-million dollar project to widen Camp Ernst Road-KY 237 in Boone County.

The $22.4 million project will include a type of interchange previously unseen in northern Kentucky. A single point urban interchange, or SPUI, will ease congestion at the busy Camp Ernst Road intersection with Burlington Pike-KY 18. The crosspoint sees more than 40,000 vehicles each day.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 6 Chief Engineer Rob Hans said the SPUI will be the road project’s biggest focus.  The uniqie interchange features arterial and ramp entrances and exits controlled by a single traffic signal. Traffic flow under the SPUI system will be uninterrupted.

The remaining aspect will be to widen and realign Camp Ernst Road-KY 237 over 1.35 miles between Rogers Lane and KY 18. The current two lanes will be expanded to five lanes with a center turning lane and curbs, gutters and 10 foot multi-use paths on each side of the new roadway. There will also be deceleration lanes into major subdivisions. 

Construction on the bridge over KY 18 will begin in the Spring. The project is slated to be complete in the summer of 2015.

This is the second section of a larger project to improve the highways in central Boone County. The first section, KY 237, was completed in December 2012.  That $9.2 million 1.7-mile project improved the Gunpowder/Pleasant Valley Road (KY 237)/U.S. 42 intersection and realigned and widened Pleasant Valley Road.

The remaining section, which is not yet funded, will tie both projects together, connecting Rose Petal to Rogers, to complete a new 4.7 mile KY 237 corridor.
