3rd Graders Take New Reading Test This Spring

(Indianapolis, Ind.) - Hoosier third graders will have to pass a new reading test or risk being held back.

In 2010, state lawmakers passed Public Law 109 requiring an evaluation of third graders reading skills. The Indiana Department of Education came up with the Indiana Reading Evaluation And Determination, or IREAD-3, assessment.

The law requires the first ever IREAD-3 test to be given to third graders across the state starting in March.

Any students who don’t pass the test are given remediation and a second opportunity over the summer to retake it.

An Indiana Department of Education spokesperson said the department does not expect to see a large number of students held back.
