Walton Man Charged with Murder Following Possible Road Rage Incident

(Florence, Ky.) - A Walton man is facing one count of murder stemming from a road rage incident on Tuesday afternoon. 

Florence Police responded to Ewing Boulevard near U.S. 42 around 12:51 p.m. for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers located two vehicles in the roadway and a male with a gunshot wound. 

The victim, Stephen Stamates, 72, of Florence, was airlifted from the scene to UC Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased. 

Travis Marks, 44, of Walton, was located at the scene and in possession of a pistol. He was detained and allegedly told officers he shot the victim. 

Marks was transported to the Boone County Detention Center and is charged with one count of Murder. 

The initial investigation revealed that the incident stemmed from a possible road rage. Through their investigation, the Florence Police Department’s Detective Unit was able to determine that the actions of the subject detained at the scene intentionally caused the death of the victim.
