Vintage Hydroplane Driver Killed In Wreck At Madison Regatta

The driver was ejected from his boat during a test lap on the Ohio River.

(Madison, Ind.) - Tragedy on the Ohio River Saturday during the Madison Regatta as 60-year-old Rick Beatty, of Dayton, Ohio, owner and driver of the vintage H-202 Heavy Duty, was killed when he was ejected from the cockpit of the vintage craft during running test laps.

According to reports, Beatty hit a wake and was ejected from the open cockpit of his boat.

Jefferson County Coroner Rodney Nay said Beatty was pulled from the river by safety and rescue personnel, who could not find a pulse.

EMT’s administered CPR while en route to King’s Daughters’ Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:06 p.m.
