Vevay Residents Ask Boyd Gaming to Pause Demolition of the Ogle Haus Inn

Community members want a voice in what happens to this historic building.

(Vevay, Ind.) - What started as a little grassroot effort, has grown into a community rallying to save a building that has been a staple since the 1980s. 

The Ogle Haus Inn was built in the mid-1980s by Paul Ogle. 

Earlier this month, Boyd Gaming announced their plan to demolish the 40-year-old inn. Boyd Gaming acquired the property when they took over ownership of Belterra Casino Resort in 2018. 

Save the Ogle Haus is a social media campaign from Vevay residents, aiming to save the historic building. 

"The Ogle Haus is more than a building. It was the vision of Vevay philanthropist Paul Ogle, who believed in his hometown and invested in its future. For generations, the Ogle Haus was a place where people gathered, celebrated, traveled, worked and made memories. Today, the Ogle Haus is facing demolition. The people of Vevay did not make this decision. The community was simply informed that the building would be closed and demolished. We believe Vevay deserves a chance to have a voice in what happens to an important part of its history," reads a statement from the Save the Ogle Haus group.

The group is asking Boyd Gaming to pause the demolition and give the community, preservation organizations and potential buyers an opportunity to explore preservation, adaptive reuse or a sale. 

"We aren’t asking anyone to operate an unprofitable hotel. We are asking that the building not be destroyed before every reasonable option to save it has been explored."

Demolition is scheduled to begin in early September.
