Two State Road 56 Bridges To Be Replaced In Switzerland Co.

Work is slated to begin in October.

(Switzerland County, Ind.) – Two bridge replacement projects have been scheduled in Switzerland County.

On Thursday, the Indiana Department of Transportation awarded Milestone with a $3.6 million contract to build new State Road 56 bridges over Tucker Run and Green Valley Creek.

Milestone crews will be tasked with replacing the 3-span concrete bulb-T bridge over Tucker Run, located six miles west of State Road 129.

Clearing is expected to begin this month at the Tucker Run structure, but crew mobilization will not occur until mid-October when traffic signals are activated. The new Tucker Run Bridge is scheduled to open to traffic in November 2019.

Work at the Green Valley Creek structure is tentatively scheduled for October 1. Then utility relocation is expected to occur until mid-to-late-December before actual bridge building begins on January 7.

Approximately 1,000 feet of new pavement will be put in place to realign State Road 56 for bridge construction just north of the current Green Valley structure. The realignment will allow for free-flowing traffic to be maintained until its time to tie new pavement into the existing S.R. 56 route.

At that time, State Road 56 will close for 14 days near the Green Valley Structure on May 1, 2019 with the scenic highway and its new bridge slated to re-open on May 15.

According to INDOT, State Road 56’s traffic count is 2,257 vehicles per day.
