(Aurora, Ind.) - Local military veterans are being celebrated in downtown Aurora just in time for Veterans Day.
On Thursday, crews began installing the signs throughout the downtown area. By the end of today, around 40 signs recognizing local veterans are expected to be posted for viewing.
This special project was spearheaded by the Aurora American Legion Post 231.
According to City Councilman Terry Hahn, the project mimics similar projects that have been completed in neighboring communities such as Rising Sun, Switzerland County and Osgood. Hahn added that Pam Elza, of Rising Sun, was particularly helpful with project guidance.
Toni Scudder, wife of Aurora American Legion Post 231 Commander Shawn Scudder, played a key role in the project, according to Hahn. "She went above and beyond, doing a lot for the project. She put it across the finish line."
Others who played a role in the project include Ernie Johnson, Mayor Patrick Schwing, PG Gentrup and City Council.
The banners were made by Chozen Design out of Versailles. Hahn said they were an easy choice to use for the project due to their experience creating similar signs for other area communities.
"They hit it out of the park," Hahn added.
When asked how long the signs will remain up, Hahn suggested the signs could be more widely spread out through downtown to make room for holiday signs. At the very least, if the signs have to come down for the holidays, they could go right back up at the first of the year.
"This was a really neat project to be a part of, and it is all about honoring our Veterans," Hahn added.
