(Hanover, Ind.) - Three Hanover, Indiana residents may have to answer to a higher power than the law after they allegedly stole from a church.
According to a court affidavit, Gary Carter, Jr. and his wife Megan Carter were doing their friend, Roxanne Davis, a favor by taking her to a court appearance in Cincinnati on May 21. They were driving back home through Lawrenceburg when they needed money for gas.
They stopped at Saint Lawrence Church. Gary Carter and Davis went inside where they allegedly swiped a church worker’s purse. It contained cash and a debit card belonging to the church.
Accounts between the Carters and Davis differ on who actually took the purse. What is known is what the group did with the money next.
Lawrenceburg Police detectives allege the trio spent $500 off the debit card to purchase a gift card at the Wal-Mart store in Aurora. The purse was left in a cart in the parking lot of the Aurora store.
The group then allegedly spent the entire amount at the Aurora Wal-Mart and another Wal-Mart in Madison.
Detectives used surveillance video from the stores to identify them.
Gary Carter, Megan Carter, and Davis all face charges of Theft (Class D felony), Forgery (Class C felony), and Fraud (Class D felony).
Gary Carter was arrested June 25, while the two woman were jailed June 27. All three remain held in the Dearborn County Law Enforcement Center as of Friday.
