INDIANAPOLIS - State Rep. Garrett Bascom's (R-Lawrenceburg) bill strengthening immigration enforcement and promoting law enforcement cooperation passed the legislature and now moves to the governor for consideration as a new law.

Under the bill, jail or detention center officials would be required to notify the county sheriff if there is probable cause to suspect an arrestee is in the country illegally. The sheriff would then be required to notify federal authorities. Bascom said the bill would only apply to individuals arrested for a misdemeanor or felony offense.

"This bill is an important step in helping enforce our immigration laws," Bascom said. "It ensures law enforcement officers are working together to identify bad actors and keep our communities safe."

Bascom said this bill could work in tandem with recent federal laws, including the Laken Riley Act, which recently passed through Congress. He also said that by sharing information, both state and federal law enforcement officials can work together to find and potentially remove bad actors from Indiana communities.
