(Aurora, Ind.) – South Dearborn High School FCCLA is back in a big way.

The program, which has been dormant for the last few school years, was a big winner at the annual Indiana FCCLA 2019 State Leadership Conference held in Muncie last week.

South Dearborn High School won four team awards, and nearly a dozen team members took home individual awards.

As a team, South Dearborn FCCLA was recognized with the Newly or Re-Affiliated Chapter Award, 50x50 Membership Award, Publicizing Your Performance Award and Gold Honor Chapter Award.

Individually, Gunner Hollin, Georgia Carson, Stacey Armah, Emily Vincent, Kortney Wright, Skylar Hampton, Torrey Hibbard, Jamie Thomas, Brooke Smith, and Zoe Ross earned awards.

As if that wasn’t enough, sophomore Torrey Hibbard was elected to serve as Indiana FCCLA 2019-2020 State Vice President of STAR Events.

“I wanted to reach a bigger audience of students so I can encourage them to be a leader like FCCLA can make them”, says Hibbard. “I have grown a lot as a student since joining FCCLA, and I am excited to work with the other state officers to continue the legacy of FCCLA here in Indiana”.

During the next year, Hibbard will plan and execute the Indiana FCCLA State Events including a summer leadership academy, fall leadership academy and the 2020 Indiana FCCLA State Leadership Family, Career and Community Leaders of America Conference. In addition, Hibbard will travel across the State of Indiana and meet with other FCCLA Chapters and help promote FCCLA, Family and Consumer Sciences Education and Career and Technical Education across the state. Hibbard will also attend the 2019 FCCLA National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California in her new role as an Indiana FCCLA State Officer.

“This is the first year that FCCLA has been back at South Dearborn High School, and I couldn’t be prouder of the work our members have done. Our goal was to put South Dearborn back on the map as an active FCCLA Chapter. We’ve done that, and so much more in just six months since I started at South Dearborn in August”, says Bryan Schuerman, M.Ed., South Dearborn FCCLA Chapter Adviser. “After not having an active FCCLA chapter for the last few school years before this one at South Dearborn, it has taken a lot of work to get South Dearborn students engaged in what FCCLA is, and I feel this is just the beginning of things you will see from South Dearborn FCCL”, Schuerman said.
